Opal derives its name from the Sanskrit word “upalas”, meaning precious stone.The ancient Romans referred to opal as “cupid stone” , or “stone of the child as beautiful as love”. The superstition that opal is an unlucky stone may relate, in practical terms, to the fact that it is a hydrous silicate stone that may dry out, possibly causing surface cracks.
